Rudolf Ludwig Carl Virchow (13 October 1821 – 5 September 1902) wore many hats: physician, anthropologist, pathologist, prehistorian, biologist, writer, editor, and politician. He earned the titles "father of modern pathology" and founder of social medicine; among his peers, he was also called the "Pope of medicine." His work during the 1847–1848 typhus outbreak in Upper Silesia became the bedrock of German public health and kicked off his political and social involvement. From that experience came his well-known saying: "Medicine is a social science, and politics is nothing else but medicine on a large scale."

Born in Schievelbein, eastern Pomerania, Prussia (today Świdwin, Poland), Virchow was the only child of Carl Christian Siegfried Virchow, a farmer and city treasurer, and Johanna Maria née Hesse. He consistently topped his classes and mastered German, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, English, Arabic, French, Italian, and Dutch. In 1835 he entered the gymnasium in Köslin (now Koszalin, Poland), aiming to become a pastor, and graduated in 1839 with a thesis titled *A Life Full of Work and Toil is not a Burden but a Benediction*. He switched to medicine because he felt his voice was too weak for preaching.

In 1839, a military fellowship for gifted children from poor families—intended to train army surgeons—let him study medicine at Berlin’s Friedrich Wilhelm University (now Humboldt University). His doctoral advisor, Johannes Peter Müller, influenced him most. Virchow defended his thesis on corneal manifestations of rheumatic disease on 21 October 1843. Right after graduating, he became Müller’s subordinate physician, then moved to the Charité Hospital for an internship. In 1844 he was made medical assistant to prosector Robert Froriep, learning microscopy from him and developing an interest in pathology. Froriep also edited an abstract journal focused on foreign work, which exposed Virchow to scientific ideas from France and England.

His first scientific paper, published in 1845, contained the earliest known pathological descriptions of leukemia. He passed his medical licensing exam in 1846 and immediately took over as hospital prosector at the Charité after Froriep. In 1847 he became a privatdozent, his first academic post. Because German editors gave his articles little attention, he co-founded *Archiv für Pathologische Anatomie und Physiologie und für Klinische Medicin* (now *Virchows Archiv*) with Benno Reinhardt in 1847. After Reinhardt’s death in 1852, Virchow edited it alone until his own death. The journal rejected any paper with outdated, untested, dogmatic, or speculative ideas.

Unlike many German colleagues, Virchow strongly trusted clinical observation, animal experimentation (to find disease causes and drug effects), and pathological anatomy—especially at the microscopic level—as core investigative methods.

His involvement in the 1848 Revolution got him expelled from the Charité the following year. He then launched the newspaper *Die Medizinische Reform* (The Medical Reform). In 1849 he took the first Chair of Pathological Anatomy at the University of Würzburg. Seven years later, in 1856, the Charité brought him back to head its new Institute for Pathology. He co-founded the political party Deutsche Fortschrittspartei, won a seat in the Prussian House of Representatives, and later entered the Reichstag. When he opposed Otto von Bismarck’s financial policies, Bismarck challenged him to a duel. Still, Virchow backed Bismarck’s anti-Catholic campaigns, which Bismarck called *Kulturkampf* (“culture struggle”).

A highly prolific writer, Virchow produced over 2,000 scientific works. His 1858 book *Cellular Pathology*, considered the root of modern pathology, introduced the third dictum of cell theory: *Omnis cellula e cellula* (“All cells come from cells”). This idea, however, is now widely seen as plagiarized from Robert Remak. He helped found the Physikalisch-Medizinische Gesellschaft in 1849 and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Pathologie in 1897. Besides *Virchows Archiv*, he started *Zeitschrift für Ethnologie* (Journal of Ethnology), published by the German Anthropological Association and the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory—both societies he also founded.

He was the first to describe and name leukemia, chordoma, ochronosis, embolism, and thrombosis. He coined terms like “neuroglia,” “agenesis,” “parenchyma,” “osteoid,” “amyloid degeneration,” and “spina bifida.” Medical eponyms such as Virchow’s node, Virchow–Robin spaces, Virchow–Seckel syndrome, and Virchow’s triad bear his name. His work on the life cycle of the roundworm *Trichinella spiralis* changed meat inspection practices. He created the first systematic autopsy method and introduced hair analysis to forensic investigation.

Virchow rejected the germ theory of disease and dismissed Ignaz Semmelweis’s idea of disinfection. He criticized what he called “Nordic mysticism” about the Aryan race. An anti-Darwinist, he labeled Charles Darwin an “ignoramus” and his own student Ernst Haeckel a “fool.” He described the original Neanderthal specimen as nothing more than a deformed human.
