Micron

American semiconductor giant and one of the Big Three memory manufacturers.

Last updated

Micron Technology is an American multinational that manufactures computer memory and data storage products like DRAM, flash memory, and solid-state drives.[1] As of February 2026, Micron had a market cap of $463.33 billion, ranking among the 100 most valuable companies globally.[2] Along with Samsung and SK Hynix, Micron is counted among the "Big Three" memory manufacturers, and it stands as the sole significant American producer of computer memory.[1]

Key facts and history

Micron sought to enter the RISC processor market in 1991 with the FRISC chip, but discontinued the effort in 1992.[3] In 1994, founder Joe Parkinson retired as CEO and Steve Appleton took over.[4] Micron's initial public offering took place in 1984.[5] A US$1 trillion market capitalization was achieved by Micron on May 26, 2026, driven by strong demand for its HBM chips.[6]

What the cited sources add

A CNBC article from October 2023 notes that just three companies make more than 90% of the world's DRAM chips, and that about a quarter of Micron's revenue comes from China.[7] A Tom's Hardware article from January 2026 states that the three major memory chip manufacturers are reportedly becoming stricter with chip orders.[8] The CNBC article also mentions that Micron has made 11 acquisitions since 1998, including Texas Instruments' memory division, Numonyx, Elpida, and Inotera.[7]
