Key facts and history
LG Electronics was founded in 1958 as GoldStar, established after the Korean War to produce domestic consumer electronics.[4] GoldStar produced South Korea's first radios, televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners, aided by a partnership with Hitachi.[4] The company developed the world's first 60-inch plasma TV in 1998.[5] GoldStar's initial public offering occurred in 1970, and by 1976 its annual television production had reached one million units.[6]
GoldStar's initial overseas manufacturing facility, situated in Huntsville, Alabama, began operations in 1982.[7] The US television manufacturer Zenith was purchased by LG Electronics in 1995.[3][5] A 55-inch OLED TV, the first of its size globally, was launched by LG in 2013, and the company subsequently became the first to mass-produce large OLED TV panels.[8][9] LG's departure from the mobile phone manufacturing sector was announced on 5 April 2021, following a period of sustained financial losses.[10]
By acquiring a 60% stake in the South Korean EV charger firm AppleMango in June 2022, LG Electronics entered the electric vehicle charging sector.[11] William Cho, previously the Chief Strategy Officer, assumed the role of CEO for LG Electronics on 1 December 2021.[11]

The same article notes that LG will conduct a two-year safety test at its research center.[13] A 2016 Korea Herald article states that LG entered the water purifier market in 2009 and combined that business with the refrigerator division in 2014.[14] Government authorization was granted to LG Electronics in 2021 to conduct tests on a washing machine that employs liquid carbon dioxide as an environmentally friendly cleaning solvent.[13]
