Gameplay

In Majesty 2, you play as the sovereign, placing buildings and hiring troops much like in other real-time strategy games. However, the hero units are semi-autonomous, each with their own stats and gear, acting based on their personal AI—hunters explore, warriors defend. You can guide them by placing bounties with flags for tasks like scouting or killing enemies. Trade buildings let you equip heroes and recoup gold they earn from flags and battles. Unlike the first game, the release version lacked freestyle play and cooperative multiplayer, as the engine couldn't generate random maps. Patch 1.3 later added randomized monster dens, spots for temples and trading posts, plus a map editor.

Plot

In Majesty 2, the action returns to Ardania, a magical realm of elves, dwarves, gnomes, and monsters. Five centuries after a great ruler unified the land, King Leonard, bored with peace, tried to banish a powerful demon for glory. The demon killed him and seized the throne, plunging Ardania into chaos. Players take control of the true heir, aiming to defeat the demon and cleanse the kingdom.

Expansions

Majesty 2 received three official expansion packs. Kingmaker, launched on March 26, 2010 for PC and later for Mac on December 15, 2010, added a randomized map feature and a map generator. Battles Of Ardania followed on November 10, 2010 for PC and December 15, 2010 for Mac. Monster Kingdom arrived on January 11, 2011 for PC and mid-January for Mac. Paradox released the Majesty 2 Collection, bundling the base game with all three expansions, on April 19, 2011 for PC. An unofficial expansion, Cold Sunrise, came out on November 16, 2011 for PC.

Reception

Majesty 2 received mixed to mostly positive reviews, with a Metacritic average of 72% and scores ranging from 50% to 88%. IncGamers enjoyed the game, saying it was lots of fun and remains true to the original, but bemoaned the lack of a freestyle mode. IT Reviews found initial enjoyment but said developing heroes and coaxing them soon felt like a chore, with repetitive missions. PC Gamer UK stated the game was an intriguing spanner in the strategy game works but caused too many malfunctions. GameSpot critiqued repetitive, formulaic missions, giving it a 6.5 out of 10.
