The Matriarch

The ground beneath your boots has been breathing for a thousand years.

The Matriarch is a campaign mission in Oxygen Not Included that thrusts the player's colony into direct contact with a colossal, ancient organism buried deep within the asteroid. Rather than a typical resource-management challenge, this mission reframes the player's relationship with the environment: the ground itself is alive, and the colony must adapt to the presence of something that has been slowly growing in the dark for untold millennia.

As a mission, The Matriarch tests the player's ability to maintain life support, manage pollution and atmospheric hazards, and make difficult triage decisions under a ticking clock. It is widely regarded by the community as one of the more atmospheric and narratively evocative entries in the campaign, shifting the tone from cozy base-building to a quiet, creeping sense of awe and danger.

Lore & Background

In the deep geology of the ONI asteroid, time moves differently. The Matriarch is not a creature in the way the player would recognize a beetle or a spore cluster; it is a slow, vast, almost geological organism that has been metabolizing mineral-rich substrate in total darkness for an incalculable span. Its body is distributed through the rock, and what the colonists first mistake for a strange mineral deposit is, in fact, a single node in a network that stretches far beyond the visible map.

The Matriarch does not hunt. It does not speak. It simply grows, and in growing, it reshapes the local environment—altering gas composition, releasing particulates, and subtly shifting the thermal and chemical balance of the surrounding strata. To the colonists, it is an adversary by proximity rather than by malice. The mission's narrative weight comes from that ambiguity: the player is not fighting a villain but negotiating with a living system that predates their arrival by orders of magnitude.

Within the broader ONI world, The Matriarch reinforces the franchise's recurring theme that the asteroid is not a dead rock but a closed, self-sustaining biosphere. Every mission is a small window into that larger ecology, and The Matriarch is perhaps the most explicit reminder that the colonists are guests in a world that was already whole before they ever broke through the hull.

In Their Own Story

Drae noticed it first—a faint, rhythmic pulse in the oxygen readings, too slow to be a pump, too regular to be a leak. She told the others it was the ventilation shaft settling. They all agreed. They all wanted to agree.

Three days later the floor in the lower storage bay was warm. Not hot. Warm. Like the surface of a sleeping animal. Kael ran his palm flat against the tile and whispered, "It's breathing," and no one corrected him.

By the fifth day the spores had found the airlock. By the seventh, the Matriarch had decided, in its slow and patient way, that the little warm bodies on its surface were part of the conversation now. Drae sealed the lower deck. She did not call it a quarantine. She called it a boundary. She was still learning the difference.

Reader's Guide

The Matriarch mission opens with a small, pre-built colony module and a limited crew. Your primary objective is to keep every colonist alive and the colony functional while the Matriarch organism actively alters the local environment—introducing hazardous spores, shifting gas mixtures, and disrupting the air and thermal balance you have carefully established.

Starting conditions are tight: limited power, a small crew with finite oxygen and food reserves, and a map where the organism's influence zone overlaps your living space. You will need to quickly establish clean-air zones, manage spore contamination, and keep temperatures within survivable ranges.

Key triggered events include the Matriarch's periodic release of spore clouds that degrade air quality in affected tiles, gradual shifts in ambient temperature as the organism's metabolic activity intensifies, and the progressive spread of its influence into adjacent strata. The colony must adapt in real time—rerouting airflow, deploying scrubbers, and relocating vulnerable colonists.

Win condition: survive the mission timer with all (or the required number of) colonists alive and the colony's core systems intact. Lose condition: all colonists perish, or critical life-support systems fail beyond recovery. The mission rewards careful planning, efficient resource use, and the ability to make hard triage calls under pressure.
