Octopath Traveler II retains the structure of following eight separate characters, each with individual narratives set in the world of Solistia, a setting more technologically advanced than the medieval environment of the previous game, resembling the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries. The protagonists include Ochette, a hunter; Castti Florenz, an amnesiac apothecary; Throné Anguis, a member of the Blacksnakes assassins' guild; Osvald V. Vanstein, a scholar falsely imprisoned; Partitio Yellowil, a merchant; Agnea Bristarni, a dancer; Temenos Mistral, a cleric; and Hikari Ku, crown prince of Ku. The game features 'Crossed Paths' chapters where pairs of travelers collaborate, and a final narrative involving the revival of the dark god Vide.

Octopath Traveler II received positive reviews from critics. It is the first Octopath game released on PlayStation platforms. The game uses a graphical style dubbed HD-2D, recreating 2D pixel-based graphics in a high-definition, 3D diorama style.
