Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent

Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is a free-to-play role-playing game from developer Acquire and publisher Square Enix. Set as a prequel to the original *Octopath Traveler*, it launched in Japan on Android and iOS in October 2020, followed by a Western release in July 2022, and a Southeast Asian release in December 2023. The Southeast Asian version later became the global edition after Square Enix handed over worldwide publishing rights to Netease Games in January 2025. The game’s story and mechanics later formed the basis for *Octopath Traveler 0*, a console title that stripped out the gacha systems and reworked the presentation. That game arrived on December 4, 2025 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. Like the original, this is a turn-based JRPG, but it incorporates free-to-play and in-app purchase mechanics into the flow. While the original limited battles to four characters, *Champions of the Continent* allows up to eight. Touchscreen controls—swiping and tapping—were added, and the “field command” system, which lets players do things like steal from NPCs, was kept. The prequel takes place in the same continent of Osterra. It offers three story paths, following Herminia the “Witch of Greed,” Tytos the “Hero,” and Auguste the “Playwright.” A new cast of playable characters appears, though some original *Octopath Traveler* characters make cameos. First announced in March 2019 with a planned release later that year, the game used the HD-2D art style from the previous title. Series producer Tomoya Asano described it as a stop-gap, apologizing to console fans and asking them to enjoy the smartphone game while waiting for a new console entry. A sign-up list for an early demo began in March 2019. The Japanese release happened on October 28, 2020. A Western release was announced in February 2022 and arrived in July 2022. On Metacritic, the game received “mixed or average” reviews. Commercially, it performed well in Japan, with Square Enix reporting 3 million downloads in its first two days. Western reception was mixed. USGamer criticized the lack of a Nintendo Switch version and disliked free-to-play mechanics in a turn-based JRPG.
