Octopath Traveler 0 is a role-playing video game released in 2025. It was developed by DokiDoki Groove Works and published by Square Enix. The game acts as a prequel to the original *Octopath Traveler* and serves as a console adaptation of the mobile title *Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent*. It launched on December 4, 2025, for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.

The gameplay retains the series' turn-based combat, including the break and boost systems. Players can recruit over 30 party members and form teams of up to eight characters. The party is split into a four-character offensive frontline and a four-character defensive backline, with players able to swap between them during battle. Outside of the main hub, random encounters force the party into combat. Players must manage resources, party composition, and enemy weaknesses to break foes. The game also incorporates town-building and farming features. Players create a custom protagonist whose hometown, Wishvale, is destroyed by a fire. The story is described as a "journey of restoration," requiring players to rebuild Wishvale. The number of buildings that can be placed depends on the platform: PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 allow 500 buildings; the original Nintendo Switch allows 250; and Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 4 allow 400. Compared to earlier series entries, Square Enix added more narrative content, new character backstories, and full voice acting. Producer Hiroto Suzuki stated that the main story, excluding optional content, takes about 100 hours to complete.

The story follows the custom protagonist after their hometown of Wishvale is destroyed by three villains: Herminia the "Covetous Witch," Tytos the "Hero," and Auguste the "Genius Playwright." The protagonist journeys across the continent of Osterra to defeat these villains, rebuild and repopulate Wishvale, and protect the village's future. Along the way, they receive the Divine Ring of the Flamebringer from a traveling scholar, who tasks them with retrieving the other Divine Rings before their power is lost to evil.

Development took inspiration from the free-to-play mobile prequel *Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent*, overhauling its story and removing its gacha and mobile game mechanics.

Reader's Guide

The game retains the break and boost battle system and turn-based combat from previous series entries, with parties of up to eight characters arranged into a frontline and backline. Over 30 recruitable party members can join as fighters or settlers. Town-building allows placement of buildings, crop fields, and paths on a grid, with building limits varying by hardware: 500 on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5; 400 on Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 4; 250 on original Nintendo Switch. The main story takes about 100 hours to complete. Octopath Traveler 0 was first showcased during the Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase on July 31, 2025, and a demo was available at Gamescom and PAX West 2025. Pre-release reception highlighted the expanded party size, base-building mechanics, and stellar soundtrack, though some critics noted lengthy battles and difficulty with random encounters. The game received 'generally favorable' reviews on Metacritic and a 'Strong' approval rating on OpenCritic.
