Early life and education

Carell was born on August 16, 1962, in Concord, Massachusetts, to Edwin A. Carell, a mechanical engineer, and Harriet Theresa, a psychiatric nurse. His father was of Italian and German descent; his mother was of Polish ancestry. The family surname was originally Caroselli but changed to Carell in the 1950s. Raised Catholic, he attended Nashoba Brooks School, The Fenn School, and Middlesex School, where he played ice hockey and lacrosse. He also played the fife and joined a reenacting group portraying the 10th Regiment of Foot. Carell earned a degree in history from Denison University in 1984, where he performed with the improvisational comedy troupe Burpee's Seedy Theatrical Company, played goalie on the hockey team, and worked as a disc jockey under the name 'Sapphire Steve Carell' at campus radio station WDUB.

Career

Carell worked briefly as a USPS mail carrier in Littleton, Massachusetts, quitting after seven months. He began performing onstage with a touring children's theater company, later appearing in the comedy musical Knat Scatt Private Eye and a 1989 commercial for Brown's Chicken. In 1991 he performed with Chicago's Second City, where Stephen Colbert was his understudy. His film debut was a minor role in Curly Sue.

In spring 1996 he joined the cast of The Dana Carvey Show, a short-lived ABC sketch comedy program; with Colbert he voiced Gary of The Ambiguously Gay Duo, an animated short that continued on Saturday Night Live. He starred in short-lived series Come to Papa and Over the Top and made guest appearances including on Just Shoot Me!. He was a correspondent on The Daily Show from 1999 to 2005, with segments such as 'Even Stevphen' with Colbert and 'Produce Pete.'

After a minor role in Bruce Almighty, his first major film role was as Brick Tamland in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004). Producer Judd Apatow then worked with Carell on The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), which Carell co-wrote and starred in; the film earned $109 million domestically and won him an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance.

Personal life

Carell and Nancy Walls, a former Saturday Night Live cast member, married on August 5, 1995. They met when she took his improv class at The Second City Training Center.
