Last updated
Star Trek: Klingon Empire is a series of interlinked Klingon-centric Star Trek novels written by Keith DeCandido, originally published as Star Trek: I.K.S. Gorkon. The series was published by Pocket Books from 2003 to 2008.
Production
Keith R.A. DeCandido's _Diplomatic Implausibility_ got a warm reception, which made him wonder if readers wanted more Klingon-focused stories. According to Jeff Ayers' _Voyages of Imagination_, Pocket Books agreed to take a risk. DeCandido had already laid groundwork in that novel and _The Brave and the Bold, Book Two_, so he moved ahead with two more books. A third came out in 2005.
The line was rebranded as _Klingon Empire_ in 2008, and _A Burning House_ broadened the story beyond the _Gorkon_ crew. Characters from that ship later appeared in David Mack's _Destiny_ miniseries and DeCandido's _A Singular Destiny_, both from 2008. Only one novel under the relaunch has been released, though Simon & Schuster hinted as late as 2012 that new Klingon books might be on the way. DeCandido has said in multiple interviews that he hasn't pitched any further installments since turning in the unrelated short story "The Unhappy Ones," which was eventually included in the 2010 anthology _Seven Deadly Sins_.
Flagship
The IKS Gorkon is a Qang-class, or Chancellor-class, war cruiser named for Chancellor Gorkon first introduced in The Undiscovered Country. The cruiser is 500 m in length, and carries a complement of over 2,000 crew.
When launched, the Gorkon was among the first of the Qang-class cruisers in service. A Good Day to Die begins sometime after Chancellor Martok ordered the Gorkon to the Kavrot Sector with the objective of finding new planets to conquer for the glory of the Empire. Captain Klag, captain of the Gorkon, was introduced in The Next Generation episode "A Matter of Honor".
