Under an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 17, 1889, a portion of Union Township was incorporated as Boiling Springs Township, named after a local spring. On March 28, 1894, the Borough of East Rutherford was created via referendum, dissolving Boiling Springs Township. It was the second borough formed during the 1894 'Boroughitis' wave in Bergen County. By 1940, East Rutherford had over 50 industrial firms.

East Rutherford is bounded by Carlstadt, Wallington, Rutherford, Secaucus, and Passaic, with the Passaic River as its western boundary and the Hackensack River as its eastern boundary. The borough has a total area of 4.04 square miles, of which 3.71 square miles is land. Carlton Hill is an unincorporated community within the township.
