Biography

The band started out as Stealer in 1981, with guitarist Tim Broughton, bassist Alex Houston, and drummer Andre Baylis. New label Ebony Records picked them for the 1982 Metal Maniaxe compilation, which prompted a name change to Chateaux. Their track "Young Blood" appeared on that record, with Houston handling vocals. Ebony later released it as a single, backed with "Fight to the Last." The debut album, Chained and Desperate, came out in 1983 on Ebony, produced by Daryl Johnson. Steve Grimmett, then active in Grim Reaper, sang on it. The band insisted he was just a guest, so he could stay focused on his main group. Garry Sharpe-Young of MusicMight did the cover art. By the second LP, Fire Power (1984), only Broughton remained from the original lineup. New members were bassist-vocalist Krys Mason (ex-Confessor) and drummer Chris Dadson (ex-Wolfbane, Sam Thunder, Aragorn). The third album, Highly Strung (1985), saw further decline. Poor sales and a refusal to tour beyond their local area ended the band. In 2003, Sanctuary Records put out the Fight to the Last 2CD compilation, which gathered all three albums and the debut single.
