Gloomy Juncture
Upcoming neo-noir adventure game by Portuguese solo developer.
Gloomy Juncture is a forthcoming neo-noir psychological thriller and character-driven adventure game from Portuguese indie developer Filipe "Subtales" Rodrigues. It has drawn praise for its distinctive low-poly 3D visuals with hand-painted textures, its approach to game design, and its cinematic storytelling.
The story follows a janitor whose ordinary life is upended by a gunshot, pulling him into a neo-noir mystery with surreal touches, set in a corrupt city where character interactions drive the plot. Gameplay involves gathering items, interacting with the environment, and solving puzzles that grow more complex as the narrative advances. Puzzles range from close-up logic challenges to large-scale environmental ones, dynamic dream sequences, and action-oriented encounters. Exploration is rewarded through character interactions, collecting items and notes, and dynamically narrated events that encourage experimentation. No puzzle repeats, and as the player solves more, the world becomes increasingly chaotic and surreal, mirroring the janitor’s mental state. Hidden objects may offer alternate solutions. The protagonist responds to player actions with hints and sarcastic observations, providing a noir-style narration with minimal diegetic tips. The game explores themes of obsession, isolation, unease, and hopelessness, weaving in social commentary on the human condition.
Rodrigues is the sole developer, handling funding, writing, art, 3D models, and audio. The visual style comes from a handcrafted pipeline: each object is drawn on paper, then digitized and modeled in a low-poly 3D style while retaining high-fidelity hand-painted textures. He calls this “gritty and pretty,” inspired by N64-era graphics. The engine uses deferred rendering with custom shaders that emphasize a paper feel and add a squiggly line effect reminiscent of 1990s animation—originally meant for static backgrounds and billboard 2D NPCs, now also used to highlight important objects. It supports volumetric lighting, fog, dynamic shadows, and multiple dynamic light sources.
Cinematic influences include neo-noir films and psychological dramas such as Alfred Hitchcock’s *Vertigo*, Martin Scorsese’s *Taxi Driver*, and Park Chan-wook’s *Oldboy*. For visuals and pacing, Rodrigues cites Dario Argento’s *Suspiria*, David Lynch’s *Blue Velvet*, and Darren Aronofsky’s *Requiem for a Dream*.

Lore & Background
Gloomy Juncture's storyline focuses on character interactions in a corrupt city. The player controls a mundane janitor whose fate becomes intertwined with a mysterious gunshot, which spirals into a neo-noir mystery with surreal elements. The visual assets are modelled in a low-poly 3D style, and textures are hand-painted and digitized, creating what Rodrigues describes as a juxtaposition of "gritty and pretty." Rodrigues began the project part-time in early 2021 to improve his game design skills during the COVID-19 pandemic, before committing full-time in 2023. The game is scheduled for release on PC and Mac via Steam.
