Chicken Police is set in an alternate world populated by anthropomorphic animals that are generally depicted as humans with animal heads. Players control Sonny Featherland, a burnt-out cop with the head of a rooster. Sonny was formerly a celebrated hero but has become an alcoholic and is estranged from his former partner, Marty MacChicken. After being approached by a distraught woman, Sonny reunites with Marty to solve one last case before his retirement. The game is a point-and-click adventure game styled after 1940s film noir. Most of the game is in a stylistic monochrome, but colors are used sparingly for emphasis. Players look for clues, interview suspects, and eventually perform interrogations. When interrogating a suspect, a minigame determines their success. After being informed of personality quirks, players attempt to find a line of questioning that will exploit that suspect's personality. Poorly-chosen lines of interrogation can close off dialogue options and reduce how much of the story's background players learn, but this does not put the game in an unwinnable state.

From that spark, The Wild Gentlemen set out to build a full cast of anthropomorphic characters. Their workflow began with live human models photographed in a studio; Adobe Photoshop was then used to swap in animal heads. Early iterations relied on stock photography for those heads, but the team found the results lacked realism, so they traveled to wildlife parks and zoos to capture their own reference images. Certain details were hand-drawn, and small props—like the glasses worn by the owl character Bubo—were crafted entirely from scratch. Once the composite images were finalized, they were broken down into textures and brought to life through animation in Unity. The team operated remotely, with members scattered across multiple countries. Both classic adventure games and the film-noir tradition shaped the design, while the buddy-cop movie genre informed the interpersonal dynamic between the two protagonists. Reviews of Chicken Police: Paint It Red! were broadly positive, with the noir atmosphere, writing, and voice performance consistently singled out as strengths. Stuart Gipp of Nintendo Life described it as a polished, captivating experience and ranked it among the best adventure titles available on the Switch. Luke Kemp at PC Gamer called it one of the most surreal experiences of his gaming life, specifically praising the script and the acting. Christopher Byrd of The Washington Post placed it in his personal pantheon of visual-novel and adventure games. Not all feedback was unqualified. Laura Cress at Adventure Gamers and Chris Shive of Hardcore Gamer both flagged the minigames as excessive or unnecessary, even while lauding other aspects of the production. Caitlin Argyros at RPGfan found the mystery's conclusion abrupt and somewhat unsatisfying, though she still enjoyed the writing. Legacy, Sequel & Community

The original title's platform footprint expanded well beyond its November 2020 debut: iOS and Android arrived in mid-2021, macOS and Google Stadia followed in late 2021, next-gen console ports landed in March 2022, and Amazon Luna received the game in October of that year. In June 2023, The Wild Gentlemen announced a sequel, Chicken Police: Into the HIVE!, published by Joystick Ventures. It launched on Windows on November 7, 2024, with PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch releases planned. The story picks up after the first game's events, following Sonny and Marty into a new investigation set in the game's seedy, enigmatic Hive district.
