Napoli won the 1988–89 UEFA Cup, beating Stuttgart of West Germany 5–4 on aggregate in a two-legged final played on 3 and 17 May 1989. Captained by Diego Maradona, the club won its first major European honour.

The UEFA Cup final was then played over two legs, home and away. Napoli were in the middle of the Maradona era, which also brought the club its first two league titles, in 1987 and 1990.
