Making and release
The original title was Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas.[1] The book is a postmodernist science fiction work that satirizes narrative elements of Star Trek.[1] FX began developing a limited television series adaptation in 2014.[2][3] Jon Shestack and Ken Kwapis were developing the series, with Kwapis attached to direct the pilot.[3]
June 2012 saw Tor Books release the novel.[4] Wil Wheaton, an actor from Star Trek, provided the narration for the audiobook version.[4] By 2017, the rights had returned to Scalzi, ending the production window.[2][5]
What the cited sources add
John Schwartz of the New York Times compared the ensigns' plight to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.[6] Forbes magazine stated the book works on multiple levels and can be read as a surreal meditation on character and genre.[7] A Forbes review called it a breezy, fun read for the beach.[7] The Slashfilm article noted the novel won the 2013 Hugo Award for Best Novel.[3]
