Monster Hunter Wilds

A 2025 action RPG with cross-platform play and a wound system.

Monster Hunter Wilds is an action role-playing game from Capcom, released in 2025 as the follow-up to Monster Hunter: World. It launched on February 28, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, with cross-platform play available across all versions. A Nintendo Switch 2 port is planned for December 4, 2026.

Players control a hunter belonging to a guild tasked with exploring the Forbidden Lands, a harsh, nearly uninhabitable region marked by multiple biomes and violent storms. The hunter takes on quests to kill or capture large monsters that threaten the expedition, then uses resources from those fights—along with materials gathered in the field—to craft better weapons and armor. Fourteen weapon types return from earlier games, each with its own moves. New to Wilds is the ability to carry two weapons at once, swapping them in the field using a bird-like mount called a Seikret. Players can also set up pop-up camps throughout the open world for a smoother hunting loop, and a wound system lets them target weak points on monsters for extra damage. The game supports solo play or online co-op with up to three other players, and it marks the series’ first full cross-platform support.

Within three days of launch, Wilds sold over 8 million copies, making it Capcom’s fastest-selling game ever. Critics praised its stronger story focus and open-world updates, but technical issues—especially on Windows—drew criticism. A major expansion, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, is due out in 2027.

Gameplay Wilds is a third-person action RPG. Players create a custom hunter who travels to the Forbidden Lands, an unexplored region with a unique ecosystem. As in previous games, the hunter tracks and fights monsters, capturing or slaying them to earn parts and resources. These are used to craft better gear for tougher fights. The world contains several biomes, each an open area that players can freely explore. They can move seamlessly between the wilds and a hunter village, where they cook, restock, and craft. Quests can be started by locating targets in the field. The Seikret mount helps with exploration, directs players to objectives, and can be ridden during combat. It also lets the hunter carry two weapons at once, though armor can only be changed in the village.

All 14 weapon types from World return, with new moves added.

Reader's Guide

Monster Hunter Wilds sold more than 8 million copies within three days of release, making it Capcom's fastest-selling game to date. It received generally positive reviews, with praise for its stronger focus on story and open-world updates, though technical aspects, especially on Windows, drew criticism. A major expansion pack, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, is scheduled for 2027. The game's significance lies in its cross-platform play, which allows players on different systems to hunt together, and its introduction of the wound system and dual-weapon carrying, which deepen combat strategy. The plot involves the hunter investigating the Forbidden Lands, encountering the White Wraith Arkveld, and uncovering the ancient Wyverian civilization's Dragontorch, leading to battles with the guardian Zoh Shia and the Frenzy Virus-carrying Gore Magala. The game's legacy includes its record-breaking sales and its role in expanding the Monster Hunter series' accessibility and narrative depth.
