Nargacuga
A monster whose attack on Hakum Village sets the story in motion.
The Nargacuga is a monster that appears in the plot of Monster Hunter Stories. In the game's opening, a Rathalos afflicted with a sickness called the Black Blight attacks Hakum Village. During this attack, Ratha, a Rathalos that had just hatched and bonded with the protagonist, tries to defend the village but is seemingly killed. Cheval's mother also dies in this attack. The Rathalos's attack sets the main conflict of the story in motion, as the Black Blight continues to threaten the world and drives Cheval's quest for revenge.
Reader's Guide
The Nargacuga appears only in the story of Monster Hunter Stories, not as a regular monster the player can encounter, befriend, or battle in gameplay. Its role is purely narrative: it is the monster that attacks Hakum Village at the start of the game, carrying the Black Blight. This event kills Cheval's mother and seemingly kills the protagonist's Rathalos, Ratha. The wound Ratha receives from the Nargacuga later causes Ratha to become afflicted with the Black Blight during the final battle against Makili Pietru, forcing the player to defeat Ratha before continuing. The Nargacuga is not a monster the player can ride, hatch from an egg, or fight in the game's turn-based battle system.
