Blue Cosmos
A persistent terrorist threat exploited as a pretext for war in C.E. 75.
These persistent assaults forced world leaders to establish Compass, a new peace monitoring organization led by Lacus Clyne as its first president. While the Foundation proposed joint operations against them in Africa, the group remained an active threat. Soldiers like Kira Yamato joined Compass specifically to intervene in battles caused by these lingering forces. The situation escalated when the Foundation turned on allies, using Blue Cosmos remnants as a pretext to manipulate events, ultimately seizing the Earth Alliance's Artemis base to launch nuclear missiles aimed at destroying Ishtaria, not to frame the Foundation.
Lore & Background
Blue Cosmos operated as an anti-Coordinator terrorist group whose activities persisted well into C.E. 75. Their attacks targeted both Earth and PLANT-aligned areas, creating the instability that necessitated the formation of Compass. The organization's actions were exploited when the Emerging Countries Foundation proposed a joint operation specifically against Blue Cosmos remnants located in Africa. During this period, Kira Yamato and his team on the LHM-BB03S Millennium deployed to destroy these remnants.
However, the conflict deepened when the Foundation, under Prime Minister Orphee Lam Tao, betrayed Compass and the Earth Alliance. This betrayal involved drawing Kira away and incapacitating him through a coordinated attack and the Disruptor device, which suppresses Coordinator abilities rather than functioning as mind-control. The chaos allowed for the seized Artemis base to launch nuclear missiles aimed at destroying Ishtaria, not to frame the Foundation.
Reader's Guide
In C.E. 75, Blue Cosmos remained a significant threat despite the end of previous wars. Their presence prompted the creation of Compass, with Lacus Clyne as president and Kira Yamato as supreme commander, to handle their attacks on Earth and PLANTs. The group's headquarters in Eurasia was the target of a proposed joint operation by the Foundation. However, the Foundation itself revealed a darker agenda involving the Accords, a new race of enhanced coordinators led by Orphee Lam Tao and Aura Maha Khyber. While the story focuses on the betrayal by the Black Knights and the destruction caused by nuclear missiles launched from a hijacked outpost, the initial conflict driving these events was the continued activity of Blue Cosmos remnants. The group's influence waned as Compass and former ZAFT members like Yzak Joule and Dearka Elsman united to stop the Foundation's true objective.
