Change
Another pilot in the squadron, another life caught between two worlds at war.
Change is a female pilot serving in the Orb Union Forces' 1st Mobile Suit Squadron during the outbreak of the blood war in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. She is one of the squadron's mobile-suit operators, flying alongside the more prominent names in the unit and sharing in the daily grind of patrol, combat, and the slow unraveling of the political tensions between Earth and the colonies.
Though she is not the narrative's central figure, Change embodies the broader cast of young Orb pilots who find themselves thrust into a conflict they did not choose. Her presence in the squadron grounds the story in the reality that the war is fought by many, not just the four GAT-X pilots who command the most screen time.

Lore & Background
The Orb Union Forces fielded the 1st Mobile Suit Squadron as a rapid-reaction unit based on the space colony Heliopolis. Change served among its pilots, training and flying in the early days of the conflict when the war between the Earth Alliance and the ZAFT was still being framed as a border dispute over C.E. territory. For pilots like her, the mission briefs were straightforward: patrol the colony's perimeter, respond to ZAFT incursions, and protect civilian infrastructure.
As the war escalated and the GAT-X series mobile suits entered the picture, the squadron's role became more complex. Change and her fellow pilots operated in the same hangar bays, shared the same mess, and flew the same sorties, but the four GAT-X pilots carried a level of strategic importance that set them apart. For the rest of the unit, the war was lived in the smaller, more personal stakes: a damaged hull, a lost wingman, the exhaustion of back-to-back combat shifts.
Change's story, like that of many secondary pilots in SEED, is one of loyalty to a cause she believes in—protecting Orb's neutrality and its people—colliding with the reality that neutrality is a luxury the war will not allow. She represents the human cost that the series' grander political machinations would otherwise obscure.
In Their Own Story
The hangar smelled of hydraulic fluid and cold coffee. Change ran her gloved fingers along the canopy of her mobile suit, checking the seal one more time before the pre-flight checklist. Around her, the other pilots were already strapping in, their voices a low murmur of static over the comm. Murrue's voice crackled through the speakers: perimeter sweep, sector nine, no engagement unless fired upon. Change nodded to herself, slid into the cockpit, and felt the familiar weight of the controls settle into her palms. Outside the hangar, Heliopolis's ring turned slowly against the black, and somewhere beyond the atmosphere, a ZAFT fleet was probably turning its guns toward them. She keyed the mic. "Squadron, Change is ready." The reply came in a half-second. She sealed the canopy, and the world narrowed to the glow of her instruments.
Reader's Guide
Change's role in the conflict is that of a squadron pilot: she flies the Orb 1st Mobile Suit Squadron's sorties, protects Heliopolis, and answers to the squadron's command structure. Her arc across the series mirrors that of the unit as a whole—beginning with the relative clarity of a defensive mandate and gradually confronting the moral ambiguity of a war where both sides claim to be protecting civilians.
She pilots alongside the GAT-X operators, which places her in the same operational sphere as Kira, Athrun, Cagalli, and True, but her narrative weight is that of the ensemble. Her key relationships are with her squadron-mates and the command staff aboard Heliopolis; she is a comrade, not a rival. The moral position she embodies is the most common one in the series: loyalty to one's unit and one's people, complicated by the knowledge that the enemy is often just another group of young pilots doing the same job from the other side.
She drives the story not through grand decisions but through the accumulation of small ones—flying the patrol, reporting the damage, staying in the fight when the briefs grow darker. In a series that often orbits its four protagonists, Change is the reminder that the war has a wider body of participants whose stories the camera only glimpses.
Did You Know?
- The Orb 1st Mobile Suit Squadron was based on the space colony Heliopolis, which served as a major staging ground for Earth-side forces during the C.E. war.
- In Gundam SEED, the GAT-X series mobile suits were developed by the Orb Union Forces as a last-resort defense, and the squadron's pilots trained alongside the four designated GAT-X operators.
- The series' central conflict pits the Earth Alliance and its Orb allies against the ZAFT, a coalition of space colonies, over the question of whether the colonies should be permitted to remain in orbit.
- Change, like many of the squadron's secondary pilots, appears in the context of the broader Orb military effort rather than in the personal storylines of the four GAT-X protagonists.
