How Adonalsium became sixteen Shards.

The Shattering is the event that created the Shards of the Cosmere. Adonalsium, the original deity, was killed by a group of at least seventeen conspirators, and its power broke into sixteen Shards, each holding immense power.

Why it matters for Mistborn

Two of those Shards, Ruin and Preservation, worked together to create Scadrial, the planet on which the Mistborn series is set. Preservation is at constant war with its opposite, Ruin, and their conflict drives the original trilogy.
