A Moon lander is a spacecraft built to touch down on the lunar surface. As of 2024, the only crewed version ever used is the Apollo Lunar Module, which made six successful landings between 1969 and 1972 as part of the U.S. Apollo Program. Many robotic landers have also reached the Moon, and a few have brought back samples.
Designing a lunar lander involves balancing payload, flight frequency, propulsion needs, and overall shape. Other key factors include total energy use, how long the mission lasts, what tasks will be done on the surface, and, for crewed missions, life support systems. Because the Moon has higher gravity than any known asteroid (but lower than all planets) and no atmosphere, aerobraking is impossible; a lander must rely entirely on propulsion to slow down and set down gently.
**History**
**1958–1976** The Soviet Union’s Luna program ran from 1958 to 1976, sending robotic impactors, flybys, orbiters, and landers. After 11 failed attempts, Luna 9 became the first spacecraft to soft-land on the Moon on February 3, 1966. Between 1972 and 1976, three Luna spacecraft returned lunar soil samples to Earth. Two others delivered the Lunokhod robotic rovers in 1970 and 1973. In total, Luna achieved seven successful soft landings out of 27 attempts.
The U.S. Surveyor program began with Surveyor 1’s soft landing on June 2, 1966, followed by four more successes, the last on January 10, 1968. Surveyor 6 even performed a brief hop off the surface. Out of seven landing attempts, five succeeded.
The Apollo Lunar Module was the crewed lander for the U.S. Apollo program. As of 2025, it remains the only crewed lunar lander. Apollo completed six successful soft landings from 1969 to 1972; a seventh attempt was aborted when Apollo 13’s service module suffered an oxygen tank explosion.
The Soviet Union developed the LK lunar module for its crewed lunar programs. Several LK modules flew uncrewed in low Earth orbit, but none ever reached the Moon. The N1 rocket needed for the flight faced multiple launch failures, and after the U.S. landed humans first, the Soviet Union canceled both the N1 and LK programs.
**2013–2023** China’s Lunar Exploration Program (Chang’e project) includes robotic landers, rovers, and sample-return missions. Chang’e 3 made the program’s first successful soft landing on December 14, 2013.

Unconventional Encounters and Unrealized Dreams
Not every spacecraft that has visited the Moon was designed to study it. Four interplanetary probes used the Moon purely as a gravity-assist waypoint, bending their trajectories toward other destinations without any lunar science as their goal. The American radio-astronomy satellite Explorer 49, launched in 1973, took a different unconventional approach: it was placed into orbit around the Moon specifically so that the lunar body could block terrestrial radio noise, giving its instruments a clean window onto deep-space radio signals. In the commercial realm, the Manfred Memorial Moon Mission (4M), built by LuxSpace, a subsidiary of Germany's OHB AG, became the first commercial lunar mission when it flew as a secondary payload on China's Chang'e 5-T1 test flight in October 2014. Meanwhile, some of the most ambitious lunar plans never materialized. The Soviet Union had designed crewed flyby and landing vehicles—the Soyuz 7K-L1 and the LK lander atop the N1 rocket—but a string of N1 launch failures led to the cancellation of both programmes in 1970 and 1976.
