Getting a spacecraft—either with people aboard or without—onto the Moon is what’s called a lunar landing. The very first object made by humans to actually hit the Moon was the Soviet Union’s Luna 2, back in 1959. The first time people did it was with Apollo 11 in 1969. Between then and 1972, there were six missions that put astronauts on the surface, plus many more robotic ones. All the crewed trips were part of the Apollo program; the last one left in December 1972. After the Soviet Luna 24 in 1976, no spacecraft managed a soft landing—meaning one that doesn’t wreck the vehicle—until China’s Chang’e 3 in 2013. Until Chang’e 4 touched down on the far side of the Moon in 2019, every soft landing had happened on the near side.

Two private efforts have tried and failed at soft landings: Israel’s SpaceIL with Beresheet in 2019, and Japan’s ispace with Hakuto-R Mission 1 in 2023. On 22 February 2024, Intuitive Machines’ Odysseus landed on the Moon after launching on a SpaceX Falcon 9 on 15 February 2024.
