Beresheet (Hebrew: בְּרֵאשִׁית, meaning "In the beginning," the first word of the Book of Genesis) was a small robotic lunar lander and probe built by SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries. It was the first Moon mission initiated by a private organization, inspired by the Google Lunar X Prize. The mission aimed to encourage young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and to deliver a magnetometer, a time capsule, and a laser retroreflector to the Moon's surface.

Originally called Sparrow, the lander was renamed Beresheet in December 2018. It weighed 150 kg (330 lb) empty and 585 kg (1,290 lb) when fully fueled at launch. About 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) tall and roughly as wide as a large household appliance, it was often compared to a washing machine. At the last moment, genetic samples and tardigrades were added in epoxy resin between the digital layers. Its scientific payload included a magnetometer from the Weizmann Institute of Science to measure the Moon's magnetic field, and a laser retroreflector array from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center for precise Earth-Moon distance measurements.

The propulsion system, built by Israel Aerospace Industries, used monomethylhydrazine (MMH) fuel and mixed oxides of nitrogen (MON) oxidizer.
