Last updated
Nicolas Deslauriers is a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger who played for the Minnesota Wild during the 2021–22 season. He was acquired by the Wild in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks just before the 2022 trade deadline. Deslauriers is known for a playing style described as a mix between an enforcer and a grinder.
Lore & Background
Deslauriers began his NHL career as a defenceman but was converted to left winger during the 2013 off-season on the suggestion of a Kings executive. He played major junior hockey in the QMJHL with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and Gatineau Olympiques, leading all QMJHL defencemen in playoff scoring in 2011.
After being drafted by the Los Angeles Kings, he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres in 2014 and made his NHL debut that March. He later played for the Montreal Canadiens and Anaheim Ducks before being traded to the Minnesota Wild on March 19, 2022, for a 2023 third-round pick. His tenure with the Wild was brief, as he left as a free agent that summer to sign with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Reader's Guide
Deslauriers' time with the Minnesota Wild was short, spanning only the final weeks of the 2021–22 regular season. He was acquired as a depth forward and physical presence ahead of the playoffs. The trade sent a 2023 third-round pick to the Anaheim Ducks.
Deslauriers did not re-sign with Minnesota and instead joined the Philadelphia Flyers on a four-year, $7 million contract on July 13, 2022. His significance to the Wild lies in his role as a rental player brought in to add toughness and experience to the lineup. He later won the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2026, after being traded there in March of that year.
