The Carolina Hurricanes are a professional ice hockey team based in Raleigh, North Carolina. They compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference and play their home games at the Lenovo Center. The franchise originated in 1971 as the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association (WHA), later becoming the Hartford Whalers upon joining the NHL in 1979, and relocated to North Carolina in 1997. The Hurricanes have won the Stanley Cup twice, in 2006 and 2026, and are the only professional team from North Carolina to have won a major sports championship.

The franchise began as the New England Whalers in the WHA in 1971, winning the inaugural Avco World Trophy in 1973 and reaching the final again in 1978. After the NHL–WHA merger in 1979, the team was renamed the Hartford Whalers and struggled to replicate its early success, recording only three winning seasons in the NHL. The Whalers' peak came in the mid-to-late 1980s, winning a playoff series in 1986 and the Adams Division title in 1987. The team moved to North Carolina in 1997, rebranding as the Carolina Hurricanes, and played its first two seasons in Greensboro while awaiting completion of its Raleigh arena. The move was marked by low attendance and financial difficulties, but the team improved on the ice, winning the Southeast Division in 1999 and making the playoffs. The Hurricanes finally settled in Raleigh in 1999 and introduced the 'Storm Squad', the first cheerleaders for professional ice hockey in North America.
