Background
Minnesota went into the playoffs as the Super Bowl favourite after a 15-1 season in which it set the NFL record for points scored and went unbeaten at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The loss made the Vikings the first team in NFL history to win at least 15 regular-season games and not win the Super Bowl. The game is counted among the most memorable conference championship games, and it later turned up in popular culture, including the How I Met Your Mother episode 'Little Minnesota'.
