Painite is a rare borate mineral whose chemical composition includes calcium, zirconium, boron, aluminium, and oxygen, with the formula CaZrAl9O15(BO3). Its distinctive orange-red to brownish-red color, reminiscent of topaz, arises from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. The mineral’s scarcity is attributed to the fact that zirconium and boron seldom interact in natural geological environments. Crystals of painite are naturally hexagonal in form, though they may also appear as euhedral or orthorhombic crystals; in some cases, they lack any crystalline structure, but most specimens are accompanied by some degree of crystal organization.
The mineral was first discovered in Myanmar by British mineralogist and gem dealer Arthur C.D. Pain, who initially mistook it for ruby. It was not until the 1950s that it was identified as a new gemstone species, and subsequently named in Pain’s honor. For many years, painite was exceptionally rare: until late 2004, only two specimens had ever been cut into faceted gemstones. Extensive exploration in the region around Mogok, which constitutes the bulk of the mineral’s known occurrence area, has since uncovered several new painite deposits. These sites have been vigorously explored, yielding several thousand additional painite specimens for study and collection.
