Kernite, also called rasorite, is a hydrated sodium borate hydroxide mineral. Its chemical formula is Na2B4O6(OH)2·3H2O. This mineral is colorless to white and forms in the monoclinic crystal system, usually appearing as prismatic or needle-like crystals, or as granular masses. It is fairly soft, rating between 2.5 and 3 on the Mohs scale, and has a low specific gravity of 1.91. Kernite shows perfect cleavage and breaks in a brittle manner.
It dissolves in cold water and, when it loses water, transforms into tincalconite. Heating kernite above 100 °C causes an irreversible change into metakernite (Na2B4O7·5H2O).
Kernite is found in sedimentary evaporite deposits in dry regions. It was first identified in 1926 in eastern Kern County, Southern California, and later named after that county. The discovery site was the US Borax Mine at Boron in the western Mojave Desert. Type specimens are kept at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. For a time, the Kern County mine was the only known source of kernite. More recently, it has also been mined in Argentina and Turkey. The largest single crystal ever documented measured 2.44 by 0.9 by 0.9 meters and weighed about 3.8 tons.
