Native copper is the naturally occurring, uncombined form of the metal. While copper is usually found oxidized or mixed with other elements, it is one of the few metals that also appears in this pure, native state. Prehistoric peoples used native copper as an important ore.

In nature, native copper usually forms irregular masses or fills fractures. Cubic or octahedral crystals are rare. Fresh surfaces are reddish, orangish, or brownish, but exposure to air typically creates a green or blue-green patina of copper(II) carbonate. It has a specific gravity of 8.9 and a Mohs hardness between 2.5 and 3.

The world’s largest native copper deposits are in the Keweenaw region of Upper Michigan. These mines were major producers in the 1800s and early 1900s. Native Americans mined copper there and at many other sites on a small scale; isotopic analysis shows copper trading routes existed across North America. The first commercial mines in the Keweenaw Peninsula—nicknamed the “Copper Country” and “Copper Island”—opened in the 1840s. Isle Royale, in western Lake Superior, also held many tons of native copper. Native peoples extracted some of it, but only one of several commercial mining attempts there turned a profit. The Ontonagon Boulder, now at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, is a geological record of native copper dragged by a glacier and deposited on the west branch of the Ontonagon River, upstream from Lake Superior. Another major deposit is in Coro Coro, Bolivia.
