A three-sport athlete at Chaska High School, he was Florida's second-round pick (52nd overall) in 2008 and signed for $760,000 rather than going to Arizona State. Called up on June 6, 2011 when Josh Johnson went on the disabled list, he debuted the next day against Atlanta, allowing one run in six innings but losing 1-0. Shaky command kept him shuttling until 2014, when he moved to the bullpen, and he swung between starting and relieving until San Diego claimed him on waivers just before 2016. With the Padres, and his slider, he broke out, making three straight All-Star teams from 2017.
