Lore & Background
Paws and Claws: Pet Vet places players in control of a veterinary clinic where they must heal sick pets back to health. Initially, players treat smaller animals such as guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, and birds, with larger animals like horses, dogs, and cats becoming available as experience is gained. The clinic's facilities can be expanded and altered, including the style of kennels, allowing more pets to be housed and increasing the range of treatments. Players are also responsible for managing the clinic's finances and supplies.
Reader's Guide
The game features six buildings that can be constructed and expanded: the practice, therapy house, small animal house, cat house, dog house, and horse stalls. In town, there are nine stores for conducting business and training the player's character. Each pet type has unique tasks for healing—dogs can play fetch and run to increase fitness, while horses can be ridden and taken to pasture. The Nintendo DS version uses voice recognition via the inbuilt microphone to issue commands to pets and calm them during treatment. Players can learn about various ailments, including fungus infection, Vitamin E deficiency, ear inflammation, mold infection, rabbit flu, lung infection, corneal injury, liver infection, sunburn, asthma, and tonsil infections. The game world includes areas that must be purchased, such as the small animal house and horse barn, while fields, meadows, practice, and town are available without purchase. The forest, beach, and town outskirts can be earned by completing objectives. Players choose from three characters—Hanna, Alex, or Sophie—and can dress them for work, riding, or leisure, and control movement with arrow keys or shift to run.
