Lore & Background

The plan was intended to create pressure on German forces simultaneous with Operation Cobra, an American offensive. It aimed to capture Verrières Ridge and villages on its south slope. German defense contained the offensive on the first day and inflicted many casualties on the Canadians. The attack proceeded in four phases, with the 2nd and 3rd Canadian Divisions and armored support. German forces, including the 1st SS Panzer Division, 272nd Infantry Division, and others, reinforced the ridge. The battle saw heavy fighting at Tilly-la-Campagne, Verrières, May-sur-Orne, and Bourguébus Ridge. The Black Watch suffered extreme losses; it was the bloodiest day for Canadian forces since Dieppe. German counter-attacks over several days forced Canadian withdrawals from May-sur-Orne and Tilly-la-Campagne, but the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry held Verrières village against dozens of counter-attacks, suffering over 200 casualties.

In Their Own Story

The drop zone is cold. The chopper's rotors are still a sound behind you, a fading wash, and the ground is already wrong—too open, too exposed. You check your magazine twice. The squad moves in a loose line through the treeline, boots crunching on frost-bitten dirt. Somewhere ahead, past the ridge and the wire, the objective is waiting. You can see the smoke from the last position, still rising. The radio crackles: coordinates, a time, a go. You step off the treeline and the world narrows to the next fifty meters, the next corner, the next round. Spring, they called it. You don't think about the name. You think about the next objective. You always think about the next objective.

Reader's Guide

The operation is a historical battle, not a game mission. It involved coordinated infantry and armored assaults under complex lighting conditions. Key phases: Phase I captured Verrières and Tilly-la-Campagne initially; Phase II saw costly attacks on May-sur-Orne and Bourguébus Ridge; Phase III failed due to lack of tank and artillery support. German counter-attacks forced retreats from several positions.
