Historically, specialized crafts with high-value products tended to concentrate in urban centers, and practitioners formed craft guilds. Skills required an apprenticeship. Craftspeople had a higher status than the unskilled urban poor and were usually in a more privileged position than the peasantry. After apprenticeship, a person became a journeyman, then a master after setting up their own shop. The Industrial Revolution limited crafts to market segments where mass production does not satisfy buyers' preferences. Today, craftspeople often use semi-finished components and adapt them to customer demands.
