Astonia III
A long-running indie MMORPG that inspired multiple fan revivals.
Astonia III was a fantasy MMORPG that first launched in September 2001. It was the solo creation of German programmer Daniel Brockhaus, who built it as a follow-up to his earlier, smaller online game, Mercenaries of Astonia. By the end of 2001, the game had moved to a full commercial release, charging a monthly subscription fee but offering new players a one-month free trial. The official servers remained online for over thirteen years before shutting down in late 2014, at which point Brockhaus released the game’s source code online.
Brockhaus had originally created Mercenaries of Astonia in 1999 as a hobby project, supporting only about 100 players at once. As its popularity grew, he decided to build a sequel with better graphics, more gameplay features, and improved netcode capable of handling hundreds of players on a single server. Alpha testing for Astonia III began on September 13, 2001, aimed at fixing bugs and testing new elements. After the paid model launched, the game’s official servers used multiple mirrors to accommodate larger crowds.
The player base steadily increased through 2002 and 2003, and Intent Software—the official developer and publisher—continued to expand the game with new locations, features, and options. A separate server version called Astonia 3.5 was later released, drawing mixed reactions, and both versions ran simultaneously. After the official shutdown in 2014, the source code release encouraged fan projects, though with restrictions on revenue.
The first community revivals appeared shortly after the source code was made public: Astonia Resurrection and Ugaris - The Legend Recovered. They were followed by Astonia 3 Invicta (later renamed Astonia Invicta Online). In the 2020s, two more revivals launched on Steam: Astonia: The Return of Yendor (later renamed Astonia Remastered) and Astonia Resurgence.

Reader's Guide
Astonia III holds significance as a long-running indie MMORPG that transitioned from a hobby project to a commercial venture, then to an open-source foundation for community-driven revivals. Its legacy is marked by the release of its source code in late 2014, which enabled multiple fan projects to keep the game alive after official servers shut down. The game received modest critical attention: IGN in June 2002 praised its quest-driven motivation, Adrenaline Vault gave it three-and-a-half stars for gameplay variety, and Computer Gaming World in March 2003 similarly rated it three-and-a-half stars, comparing its style favorably to Ultima Online and Diablo.
