Ashen Empires
2D MMORPG that evolved from Dransik and became free-to-play.
Ashen Empires is a two-dimensional massively multiplayer online role-playing game. It was created by American developer Jason "Lothgar" Ely and is currently owned by Iron Will Games. The game entered a free, open beta in 2002, with its official release following in 2003.
The game evolved from an earlier title called Dransik, which was itself an upgraded version of the original Dransik game—now known as Dransik Classic. That original game was built as a tribute to Ultima V by Jason Ely and Doug Gesler, using a similar tileset but in SVGA resolution. Dransik Classic remains playable through the Pixel Mine launcher.
Ashen Empires launched as a free beta in September 2002 under publisher Asylumsoft Inc. After beta testing, it switched to a pay-to-play model on March 10, 2003. Later that year, on December 16, Asylumsoft sold the game's assets to TKO Software, and the title was renamed Ashen Empires. In 2005, TKO Software sold the multiplayer rights back to Iron Will Games.
Initially, the game required a monthly subscription, a common model for MMORPGs at the time. Iron Will Games later introduced a free-to-play option with restrictions. Until early 2008, free players received only 10% of all experience, had limited tradeskill access, and could not use the party system, trade table, or loot certain mobs. In early 2008, these limits were relaxed: free players now earned 50% of experience, could party with other non-subscribers, and could freely trade with them via the trade table. They could receive items from subscribers but not give them. Subscriptions ended in 2009, making the game fully free-to-play, though a pay system for in-game bonuses was added. A questlog was introduced in June 2020. In September 2022, both Ashen Empires and Dransik were released on Steam.
Each account can hold up to four characters per server. Players choose from three races: human, night elf (also called Astari), or orc. The game features seventy-one skills, covering armed and unarmed combat, magery (spellcasting), and tradeskills such as Mining, Iron Forging, Baking, Planting, Harvesting, and Large Blades.
In a 2006 review, Blair Morris of OMGN praised the game as high quality and recommended it to all MMORPG fans, highlighting its world, gameplay, and welcoming community.

Lore & Background
Ashen Empires began as Dransik, an upgraded version of the original Dransik game (now known as Dransik Classic), which used an older graphics engine. The game was first launched through an open, free beta in September 2002 by its original publisher, Asylumsoft Inc. After the beta-testing stage was complete, the game started following a pay-to-play model on March 10, 2003. On December 16, 2003, Asylumsoft sold the assets of the game to TKO Software, and the game was renamed to Ashen Empires. Under Iron Will Games, a monthly subscription fee was required to play. Later, the company allowed users to play for free but with a limited experience.
Reader's Guide
Ashen Empires represents a notable example of an early 2000s 2D MMORPG that transitioned through multiple ownership and business models. Its origins in the Dransik series, itself a homage to Ultima V, connect it to the broader history of graphical online role-playing games. The game's shift from a subscription model to a free-to-play model with optional bonuses reflects industry trends of the late 2000s. The game's reception includes a 2006 review praising its quality and community, while a 2011 review noted its aged system and lack of quest tracking. The game's persistence through ownership changes and its eventual release on Steam in 2022 demonstrate its enduring niche appeal. Its seventy-one skills, three races, and four-character-per-server limit are characteristic of the era's MMORPG design. The game's legacy lies in its survival as a free-to-play title with a dedicated player base, and its history illustrates the volatility of the early MMORPG market.
