What Happens at Night

Production

In April 2023, Martin Scorsese was announced as producer of What Happens at Night, with a script by Patrick Marber adapted from Peter Cameron's 2020 novel. By September 2025, Scorsese was set to direct, and Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence joined the lead cast. Apple Original Films entered talks to distribute and co-produce, with a planned January 2026 shoot. Scorsese, Lawrence, and DiCaprio had previously been attached to a Frank Sinatra biopic before its postponement.

Deadline Hollywood reported that What Happens at Night was the project the trio secretly aimed for after the script was completed earlier that year. DiCaprio stated Scorsese had him rewatch Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo as a reference point. Mads Mikkelsen joined in December 2025, Patricia Clarkson in January 2026, Jared Harris in February, and Welker White in March. In March 2026, Jeff Sneider reported that Paul Thomas Anderson had uncredited rewritten Marber's script at DiCaprio's request.

Ilinca Manolache and Gabriel Spahiu were revealed as cast in May 2026. Principal photography began in the Czech Republic on February 24, 2026, with additional filming in Switzerland. Post-production was reported to have begun on May 29, 2026.
