Background
DiCaprio and Warner Bros. bought the rights to the memoir in 2007, but the project stalled and was eventually made by the independent Red Granite Pictures, shooting in New York in late 2012 mostly on 35mm film. Paramount released it in the United States on 25 December 2013. It earned $407 million worldwide, the highest gross of any Scorsese film, while drawing criticism for its moral ambiguity, its graphic sexual content and its profanity.
