Steven Allan Spielberg (born 18 December 1946) is an American filmmaker, a major figure of the New Hollywood era and a pioneer of the modern blockbuster. He is the highest-grossing film director of all time, and his honours include three Academy Awards, the AFI Life Achievement Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

He and Martin Scorsese both helped with the restoration of Lawrence of Arabia, and Scorsese is among the directors his article lists as admirers of his work.

Background

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Spielberg grew up in Haddonfield, New Jersey, and Phoenix, Arizona, before moving to California and studying film. He began in television, made his directorial debut with Duel (1971) and his theatrical debut with The Sugarland Express (1974), which started his long collaboration with composer John Williams.
