Background
The species was described by Hombron and Jacquinot, surgeons on the expedition of the corvettes Astrolabe and Zélée, during the years 1837–1840 under the command of Dumont-d'Urville. The description was published in the Atlas d'histoire Naturelle zoologie, part of the voyage to the South Pole and Oceania. The specific epithet 'oneratus' means 'loaded', referring to the shell's ornamentation or appearance.
Nassarius oneratus belongs to the Nassariidae family, which includes mud snails and dog whelks. Its shell, ranging from 10 to 18 mm in length, is typical of the genus. The species is found in the Indo-West Pacific region, specifically off La Réunion, the Mascarene Basin, and the Solomon Islands.
Later references include works by Drivas and Jay on the shells of La Réunion and Mauritius, and by Marais and Kilburn in the identification guide to seashells of South Africa. Cernohorsky's systematic study of the family Nassariidae also includes this species.
