Caesia perpinguis
A marine snail with a cancellated shell and distinct color bands.
Last updated
Caesia perpinguis is a marine snail, a gastropod mollusk belonging to the family Nassariidae. The shell is ovate-acute with 5½ rounded, cancellated whorls. Its longitudinal striae are nodulous except near the base of the body whorl, and a deep sulcus lies behind the aperture.
The two upper whorls are entire, the outer lip is striated inside, and the conical spire is longer than the aperture. The shell’s surface is roughened by a tubercle at each intersection of the revolving lines. One described color form, Nassa perpinguis var. bifasciata, is strikingly distinct: it has two broad, deep chestnut spiral bands in sharp contrast to a grayish-buff ground.
One band sits just below the suture, another around the periphery, and occasionally a fainter band appears at the base of the body whorl. The bands vary in width, but no specimens have only a single band. This species has been found in Magdalena Bay on the western coast of Mexico, as well as in the Persian Gulf.
