United had finished third in the league and already had four FA Cup victories. It was the third successive year that the FA Cup Final required a replay.

Rain lashed Old Trafford, heavier than at Wembley, threatening to wash away the tension of the replay. When Brian Robson finally broke the deadlock, slotting home his opening strike of the night, a roar erupted from the stands that seemed to shake the stadium’s foundations. He followed up with a second before half-time, shattering Brighton's resolve. By the time veteran defender Gordon McQueen rose above the crowd to head in the fourth, the script had been rewritten entirely.

In the replay, Brighton started strongly but United took the lead on 25 minutes when Alan Davies set up captain Bryan Robson for a left-footed drive. In the 30th minute, Davies crossed for Norman Whiteside to score with a header, making the 18-year-old the youngest player to ever score in an FA Cup final as per 2024. Just before half-time, Gordon McQueen headed on a free-kick and Robson tapped in for his second goal. In the second half, Dutch midfielder Arnold Mühren scored a penalty after Robson was brought down by Stevens. The scoring was completed with that penalty.
