The 1983 FA Cup final was contested by Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion at Wembley Stadium on 21 May 1983. The final ended 2–2 after extra time, forcing a replay at Wembley five days later, which Manchester United won 4–0.

Background
United were favourites: Brighton had been relegated from the First Division that season and had never reached a cup final, while United had finished third with four FA Cup wins already. Gordon Smith put Brighton ahead, Frank Stapleton and Ray Wilkins replied and Gary Stevens equalised late. Brighton travelled to Wembley by helicopter and captain Steve Foster was suspended for the first match; Smith's late miss produced the radio line '...and Smith must score'. In the replay on 26 May, Bryan Robson scored twice, Norman Whiteside once and Arnold Mühren converted a penalty. It was the third successive year the final needed a replay.
