The 2008 UEFA Champions League final took place on 21 May 2008 at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow between Manchester United and Chelsea, the first all-English final in the competition's history and the first European Cup final played in Russia. United won 6–5 on penalties after a 1–1 draw after extra time.

Background
Cristiano Ronaldo headed United ahead in the 26th minute from a Wes Brown cross and Frank Lampard equalised on the stroke of half-time. Didier Drogba was sent off in extra time for slapping Nemanja Vidić. In the shoot-out John Terry slipped and hit the post with the kick that would have won it for Chelsea, and Edwin van der Sar saved from Nicolas Anelka. It was United's third European Cup final after 1968 and 1999, Chelsea's first, and fell in the 50th anniversary year of the Munich air disaster.
