The competition was founded as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992, after First Division clubs broke away from the English Football League. The league is a corporation governed by its member clubs and managed by a chief executive. Fifty clubs have competed in the Premier League since its inception in 1992: 48 from England and two from Wales. Seven have won the title: Manchester United (13), Manchester City (8), Chelsea (5), Arsenal (4), Liverpool (2), Blackburn Rovers (1) and Leicester City (1). Only six clubs have played in every season to date: Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur.

The final days of the 1995–96 season remain etched in memory. Newcastle United held a commanding 12-point lead at the top in January, but as weeks passed, that buffer vanished. By the end of March, Manchester United had moved into first place, only to face Blackburn Rovers on the final day while trailing by two points. In a dramatic twist, Blackburn lost to Liverpool, and United drew at West Ham United. Had United capitalized on Blackburn's loss, they might have won; instead, Blackburn took the title. Yet United's resolve was unbroken. They returned in 1996–97 to reclaim the league, proving that a single setback could not derail their ambitions. Another defining moment came in May 2011, when United drew away at Blackburn Rovers to secure their 12th Premier League title and record 19th league championship overall, ending a season where they had once again proven their ability to withstand pressure until the very last whistle.
