By 1888, it became a founding member of The Combination, a regional league that completed its first season (1888-89) but dissolved partway through the second season (1889-90). Newton Heath then joined the Football Alliance, which merged with The Football League in 1892, placing the club in the First Division. The club moved to Bank Street in 1893 while still known as Newton Heath LYR, dropping the 'LYR' from its name around 1893-94.
After two seasons, the club was relegated to the Second Division. In January 1902, with debts of £2,670, a winding-up order was served. Captain Harry Stafford found four local businessmen, including John Henry Davies (who became club president), each investing £500 for a direct interest in running the club. On 24 April 1902, the club's name was changed to 'Manchester United'.
