Walt Lloyd

The only child main character of Lost, whose supernatural abilities and rapid aging led to his departure from the show.

Walt Lloyd is a fictional character portrayed by Malcolm David Kelley in the American ABC television series Lost. He is the 10-year-old son of Michael Dawson and Susan Lloyd, introduced in the pilot episode as one of the survivors aboard Oceanic Flight 815 after it crashes onto an island. Walt appears in thirty episodes: 27 in seasons one and two as a series regular, and three more as a guest star, plus the epilogue 'The New Man in Charge'. Initially, he has a dysfunctional relationship with his father but forms friendships with other survivors like Locke and Sun.

He leaves the island on a raft with Michael, Jin, and Sawyer during 'Exodus', only to be kidnapped by the Others. They later release him in 'Live Together, Die Alone', claiming he was 'more than [they] could handle'. After leaving the island, Walt lives at his grandmother's house due to Michael killing Ana-Lucia and Libby, then moves to New York City. In the series finale epilogue, Ben and Hurley visit him in a mental hospital and take him back to the island.

Lore & Background

Walt is the 10-year-old son of Michael Dawson, a construction worker, and Susan Lloyd, a law student. Born August 24, 1994, he was named after Michael's father. His mother refused to marry his father but took him to Amsterdam as an infant before moving to Rome with her boss, Brian Porter, two weeks before Walt's second birthday. After a legal battle, Susan died in Australia from a blood disorder eight years later, and Brian gave custody of Walt to Michael, revealing he was scared of the boy.

On the island, Walt exhibited natural talent in knife throwing and formed friendships with Locke and Sun after his relationship with Michael became dysfunctional. He briefly possessed supernatural abilities, suggested by producers to include summoning animals through telepathy, such as causing a bird to hit a window or making a polar bear attack him. The Others kidnapped him because he was 'more than [they] could handle,' releasing him in the episode 'Live Together, Die Alone'.
