Background
As the helicopter carrying Desmond and Sayid lands on the freighter Kahana, Desmond's consciousness slips back to 1996. Sayid calls Daniel Faraday, who tells Desmond to find him at Oxford in 1996; there Daniel warns him to find a "constant", someone present in both periods of his life, to anchor him to reality.
Desmond tracks down Penny Widmore in 1996 and promises to call her on Christmas Eve of 2004. Back in the present he makes the call, learns that she has been looking for him since his disappearance, and they affirm their love, saving him. Daniel finds a note in his journal naming Desmond as his constant.
