Yosemite Sam
The short-tempered outlaw who charges headfirst into every trap set by Bugs Bunny.
Yosemite Sam is a fierce cartoon character from the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series, produced by Warner Bros. Cartoons. His real name is Aloysius Bartholamew Sam, taken from Yosemite National Park in California. Created as a more formidable adversary for Bugs Bunny than the mild-mannered Elmer Fudd, Sam is an aggressive, gunslinging outlaw with a hair-trigger temper and an intense hatred of rabbits. Throughout his history, he has appeared in 33 animated shorts between 1945 and 1964, often adopting various aliases like "Chilkoot Sam" or "Riff Raff Sam" to fit non-Western themes.

Lore & Background
Yosemite Sam was introduced by animator Friz Freleng in the 1945 cartoon Hare Trigger. The character is widely considered a caricature of Freleng himself, featuring his grumpy demeanor, fiery temper, strident voice, and short stature; this resemblance is confirmed by production crew members and Freleng's own daughter. Freleng noted in an Associated Press interview, "I have the same temperament, I'm small, and I used to have a red mustache." Other influences include Sheriff Deadeye from Red Skelton, Dangerous Dan McFoo from Tex Avery cartoons, Jimmy Finlayson, Frank Nelson, and the Terrible-Tempered Mr. Bang from Toonerville Trolley.
Michael Maltese originally considered names like Texas Tiny or Denver Dan before settling on Yosemite Sam. While often a cowboy, Freleng dressed him in diverse costumes for almost every film, including a knight, Roman legionary, pirate, Hessian mercenary, and even a space alien, with the humor stemming from the miscasting of this hot-tempered cowboy.
Reader's Guide
Yosemite Sam is defined by his extreme aggression, loud voice, and short stature, often wearing a black Domino mask regardless of his costume to signify his outlaw status. Unlike Elmer Fudd, Sam is tougher and quicker to learn from mistakes, yet he remains bumbling and falls for the same challenges repeatedly. Bugs Bunny exploits Sam's inability to refuse a dare; whenever Bugs dares him to "step across that line," Sam inevitably does so, often into empty space or a mine shaft. During the Golden Age (1945–1964), he appeared in 33 shorts. Notably, in Looney Tunes Cartoons on HBO Max, his six-gun pistols were removed, though cartoon violence like dynamite remained permitted. This change was reversed in Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021), where he is depicted using pistols again. His voice borrows from comedic actors like Finlayson and Nelson.
