Lore & Background
Tweety's world revolves around his relationship with Granny, a good-natured widow extremely protective of her beloved bird. Whenever Tweety is threatened—usually by Sylvester—Granny steps in, demonstrating surprising cleverness and resourcefulness despite her elderly appearance. In the mid-1950s, Granny was portrayed as an elderly spinster wearing spectacles, a gray bun, and a late 19th-century schoolmarm dress, often traveling by Ford Model T or horse and buggy. After 1955, her wardrobe was updated, and her old-fashioned ways were de-emphasized; she even took on newer careers like nurse or bus driver. Tweety's protection is central to the narrative, as Sylvester constantly attempts to eat him, only to be thwarted by Granny's intervention or Tweety's own cunning strategies.
Reader's Guide
Tweety Bird's journey began with early appearances of a similar "granny" character in spoofs like Little Red Walking Hood (1937) and Hiss and Make Up (1943). However, the definitive version of Granny and her relationship with Tweety was established in Canary Row (1950), where Bea Benaderet provided the voice. June Foray took over in 1955 after voicing the character on Capitol Records since 1950, continuing for almost 60 years until her death in 2017. Candi Milo then assumed the role in 2017 and has voiced Granny in subsequent appearances, including New Looney Tunes (voiced by Milo), Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021), and King Tweety (2022). In Space Jam: A New Legacy, after being picked up from The Matrix part of the Warner Bros. 3000 server-verse, Granny became a member of the Tune Squad and defeated Chronos by activating his time-control device to age him to 132 years.
